What’s Cool About an Elephant Quiet Book Page
Kara loves Elephants, and “makes,” her one year old brother like them too. The Elephant Quiet Book page is a super cool page because you can make the balloons larger to take away choking hazards, or exchange the buttons for velcro or threading buttons and get a whole new affect from it. You can also add texture and create a tactical book. I love this page also because …..
Kara is almost three and these press buttons are fairly small, although the largest the craft store had that day. This page is excellent at church, or areas we need whispers for two reasons. One, it takes time. It takes her a solid two to three minutes to clip in one button right now (this page may be slightly advanced for her at this age; a great page to grow with!). Two, she loves it but does not have the concentration span to complete it. So, she swaps to another page and when she returns to a “favorite” page such as this one, there is still more to complete without repeating the same thing over again.
I got the idea for this page here, where the maker did use velcro. Felt velcro is very strong and won’t let you down if you go that route! We used it for many things in this book!
What I Did Wrong on the Sid the Science Kid Quiet Book Page
For once I’m super excited I didn’t mess a whole lot up! These clip buttons are better for more advanced kids with better dexterity and fine motor. I’d be a little sheepish they would be frustrating and either lost or thrown by young ones without that developed skill; so some of you may want to reinvent the connection mechanism. Otherwise, I love this page, and the stitching of the page!
What I did Right
I love love love this page! Everything about it. I love that the balloons are two layers thick. This could easily be made into a no-sew page simply by making the balloon one layer of felt, no stitching. I feel like the two layers with a “free” layer of felt laid between the two sewn pieces really helps my daughter grab the pieces more easily. The thickness fits in toddler hands well. The ribbon is simply felt-glued to the background piece.
