Deep and wide, deep and wide, there are fountains flowing deep and wide! This children’s Bible song comes from a story in the 4th chapter of John. Jesus is sitting by a fountain when a Samaritan woman happens to come. Jesus asks the woman for water but has nothing to put the water in. In conversation, Jesus tells the woman that his fountain will never stop flowing if she takes the water he has instead of the typical water he needs.

This week, in addition to reminding our children they are more valuable than rubies, confident and important human beings, and that Christ-like adults are eager beavers, it is important to teach children things are not always easy. MONDAY:

Letter E & F Coloring & Identification
Coloring Wooden Blocks: I tell you here how we We used Seargent Art Liquid Water Colors to color our dollar store wooden blocks. I chose this activity because while it is not related to food or maps (bringing food from afar) it gives Kara an opportunity to start the week off right: helping mommy, wanting to listen and obey, all while enjoying it! Being water colors, it is okay for it to be bit messy.
Topics of Conversation: Why do we listen to our mommies and daddies? God says you must listen to mommy and daddy, but why do you want to? Why do you not want to? Do you know why mommy asks you to do things?

TUESDAY:

Maps: We talk this week about searching far for food, the hard labor and dedication to select good food to nourish our families. We cook food, we shop for food… what does a two year old know about distance? My best guess is kids that have flown at window seat have the best collection of distance. They can physically see the ground leaving their feet. My two year old has never flown. So, today we started learning the states of our country on a US Map. I stole the concept from Grasping for Objectivity. Her idea seriously works, yawl. I’m typing this on Thursday, and we’ve done four 3-minute sessions. She knows four states: Hawaii, Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio!
Topics of Conversation: What is a place? Where do we live? Where did Jesus live? Where does He live now? Where do you like going? How far away is that place? What would you do to get to where you want to be? What do you want to be? Whatever it is, it isn’t easy. It will be very hard, but I will help you get there with hard work.

Wednesday:

Cooking for Someone in Need: We actually chose someone who is important in our life who recently suffered a loss of a dear friend. We cooked her Kara’s favorite meal for them, Root Beer BarbQue Chicken, and hand-delivered it. Kara got to stir in the sauce!
Spending Dedicated Time to Change Someone’s Life: We also spent quality time with the family. I was careful to not overstay our welcome, as this is a super difficult time in their lives. But, I tried to show Kara that being friendly and offering support is sometimes all that we can do when there is nothing we can do.
Topics of Conversation: Why did we cook the meal from scratch? Why did we not just go pick up fast-food or a frozen dinner select? Wasn’t it harder and more time consuming for us to cook? What is important, and why do we invest in people? What is an investment? We literally took someone food from afar. We drove 30 minutes to deliver a meal to someone who needed compassion. What is compassion?

THURSDAY

Letter Coloring Sheets: G&H
We used Grimm’s Blocks (Look at Monday’s activity for instructions on how to make them) again today for patterns. Patterns are all around us, and critical in the learning of a child. My daughters favorite current show is UmiZoomie, and they are obsessed with patterns. It was simple, I just laid out a pattern of colors – whatever popped in my head – and Kara matched her blocks to that that I put down. Then she tried to guess the next color.
Topics of Conversation: how arLetter G & H Coloring & Identificatione they in our lives every day? Talk about behavior patterns and introduce the word Character. Romans teaches us that hardships create endurance. Endurance creates patterns. Patterns create character. And character helps us reach salvation. I explained to Kara today how always being good and always being bad makes us have good and bad habits and good and bad character. I know all of my bed time 30 second chats are doing good, even if she doesn’t understand it all at once. Because when my husband yelled at the dog, Kara was quick to call out “Character daddy, character!” A starting block for the rest of her life <3 It sounded a bit more like “kick her” than Character; but she’s trying!

FRIDAY

A trip to the park! Every kid needs to get out and about, especially ones who aren’t in preschool or other continuous engagements. Social interaction is so important, and presents to many opportunities for Character Building. I don’t force Kara to share, never have. But, 90% of the time… she just does.
Topics of Conversation: What friends did you make today at the park? What did God make at the park? Trees? Lakes? Grass? Sky? Sun? He made it so you could play in it and enjoy it. He made it so you can be the best person you know how to be. He made it so we could make people’s lives better. You did good today, and you were so nice to all the babies at the park.
